About This Item
In Latin. Dedicated to Prof. K.M. Setton (1914-1995), eminent medievalist at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study (at this time at the University of Pennsylvania). Bears his bookplate and an inscription in Latin to him from Abbot Gabriel.
Fr. Astrik L Gabriel, O.Praem (1907 - 2005), the world's leading authority on the history of the medieval university, was Director and Professor Emeritus of the Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame and founder of the Astrik L Gabriel Collection on Medieval Universities, probably the world's most comprehensive collection of books, journals, photocopies, articles, mocrofilms, offprints, commentaries, etc. concerning all aspects of medieval university life, particularly at the University of Paris.
The present work presents hitherto unpublished material concerning receipts received and expenses for the academic years 1425/1426 to 1493/1494. It also discusses the territorial origin of the scholars (who came from seventy-six dioceses) to pursue the degree of baccalaureate, and their economic and social status. Fr. Gabriel also writes about the migration of scholars and teachers between universities as well as he prevailing intellectual climate.
This is a hard-to-find highly specialized work for professionals.
