Boston: L. Prang and Company, 1879. Leather bound. Very good. 2 vols.: ix, 192; 200 p. 27 cm. 48 chromolithographic plates in each volume. Green half leather. New spine labels. Board reattached. Moderate wear to extremities. The author was founder of "Meehans Monthly" and editor of "Gardeners Monthly." These are the first two volumes in a set of four. Beautiful plates by Austrian-born watercolour painter Alois Lunzer who specialised in botanical illustrations. The publisher, Louis Prang, is best known as the "father of the American Christmas card" but was also a general printer and lithographer.

Two volumes, comprising the complete first series Volume I: ix, 192; Volume II: v, 200, with at total of 96 chromolithograph plates (48 in each volume). 10.5" x 7", bound in full leather with decoration stamped in blind and gilt, raised bands, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Each volume stamped in gilt on the front board with a short title and the name Mary Dow. A brief pencil inscription on the front flyleaf of Volume II reveals this to be Mary Amelia Dow of Carson City, Nevada, who received these volumes as a gift on her 21st birthday (January 22, 1881). Both volumes scuffed at corners and along the joints, slight variation in the color of the leather between the two volumes, typical offsetting from the plates to facing pages, but overall a sound and attractive set. Boston, 1878-1880.. Four volumes bound in two. ix,192, v,200; ix,196, 204pp., plus forty-eight chromolithographed plates in each volume, for a total of 192 plates. Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter morocco and pebbled cloth, gilt emblem on front boards, spines gilt, raised bands, a.e.g. Very minor foxing and offsetting. Overall very good. Meehan was an Englishman, trained at Kew, who moved to Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1853, where he spent the rest of his life running a nursery and editing various gardening periodicals. This is his masterwork, and one of the leading authorities on ferns in America. It is also a notable 19th-century American color plate book, issued by Prang of Boston, the leading chromolithographer of the period.
