About This Item
Kuala Lumpur: Institut Terjemahan Negara Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. First English language edition. Paperback. Very Good. The retelling of the story of Maria Hertog, originally born into a Dutch family in the Netherlands East Indies, but who ended up with Malay foster parents during the Japanese occupation and was renamed Nadrah and brought up in a Malay Muslim household. After the war her biological parents traced her to her foster parents' home in Terengannu, Malaya. Court battles and riots ensued and Maria was eventually returned to her parents, who returned with her to the Netherlands. The whole episode became a cause celebre in the conflict between Christianity and Islam and colonisers and the colonised. It is unlikely that this book is a dispassionate account of the affair. Very Good Paperback. First English Language Edition. 397 pages with a bibliography and index. Weight: 0.8kg. Post free within Malaysia The text block is a bit dirty and there are one or two bits of spotting on the inside covers. Otherwise the book looks new.
