About This Item

EDINBURGH: W H LIZARS, 1839 A very good copy of the 1st edition of Part II of Birds of Great Britain and Ireland in the original publisher's cloth binding. This volume covers a range of familiar birds from bullfinches to wrens. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of William Smellie with tissue guard; hand coloured vignette title page showing a robin; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of William Smellie; text with black and white illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates bound at the rear. The original binding has been rebacked, relaying the original spine, and is sound and tight. There is slight scuffing to the boards, which have light wear to corners and edges. There is fading to the spine and to the board edges. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair at the inner joints. Text and plate pages have light toning at the margins. The plates are clean and well coloured. The paint has splashed however in a couple of places eg at plate 16 where there is a small blue splot at the bottom of the plate and a blue splash at the back of the previous plate affecting the plate edge. Plates are without tissue guards and there is some offsetting to the backs of previous plates.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
