About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1889. First edition of "the book that really launched biometrics" (Reeve, p. 90), which describes the statistical methods Galton had developed to measure biological variation and inheritance. Despite being his most technical work, it was criticized upon publication for its perceived methodological simplicity. Nevertheless, it was a formative influence on Galton's two main disciples, Karl Pearson and Walter F. R. Weldon. Galton coined the term "eugenics" from the "the Greek roots for 'beautiful' and 'heredity'... he believed selective breeding (the cultural equivalent of Darwin's natural selection) to be the only hope for improving the human race" (ODNB). This copy has the ownership signature of one Roger Wood on the half-title, dated 1970, possibly the British biologist and academic Roger John Wood, who has published on Mendelian genetics and the cultural history of heredity. Octavo. Original dark red cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers framed in blind, top edge untrimmed. With diagrams and charts. 2 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Spine and upper boards sunned, ends and corners rubbed and bumped; endleaves lightly foxed but contents otherwise crisp, gauze visible in a few places but otherwise tight and firm: a very good copy. Eric C. R. Reeve, ed., Encyclopedia of Genetics, 2001.
