About This Item

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1994. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Signed on the title page by the editor of the book, the wife of Archie Carr: "For Peggy Ruhine [sp?], with affection, Marjorie Harris Carr, April 1996." Uncommon signed.

A notable signature because Marjorie Harris Carr is an important environmentalist in her own right. She was the founder of the Florida Defenders of the Environment and co-founder of the Alachua Audubon Society, both of which led critical conservation efforts in central Florida. Along with a slew (slough?) of Florida recognitions, including induction into the Florida Women's Hall of Fame, she received the National Wildlife Federation's Conservation Science Award, the NY Zoological Society's gold medal for achievement in biological conservation, and the Teddy Roosevelt Conservation Award. She did not write any books herself, but the University Press of Florida published a biography of her in 2014.

Published ten years after Archie Carr's death, this book collects "some of his most enchanting essays on Florida" where the Carrs lived for 50 years. Archie Carr was a decorated zoologist at the University of Florida, a turtle expert, and an acclaimed natural history writer, winner of the John Burroughs Medal for The Windward Road. Blurbs on the rear from Carl Hiaasen, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and Thomas Lovejoy among others. With a foreword by E.O. Wilson.

A very near fine book with a faint bit of dust soiling to upper text block face and a hint of browning to extreme edges of the free endpapers; in an about fine jacket.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
