Pleasing half green morocco by Baytun (stamp-signed in ink on verso of free endpaper), raised bands, compartments ruled in gilt and with either gilt lettering or a gilt bird motif. With 23 black & white illustrations and four plates (including frontispiece). Title and one other leaf with small blind stamp of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Wilson 6; Payne A5a (1000 copies printed); Casey Wood 393: 'charming work'; Hilton 4835; Spain & Spanish America I, 338. ◆Joints and edges slightly rubbed, upper corners a little bumped, light fading to cloth, but a pleasing binding in excellent condition overall; contents with occasional minor foxing, but very clean throughout.
Beginning in his youth, Argentinian-born William Henry Hudson (1841-1922) was fascinated with, and a keen observer of, the natural world. He had a special interest in birds, which became the subject of a large fraction of what he published. The present item is the first of his four major bird books (the others being "Birds in London," 1898, "Birds and Man," 1901, and "Adventures among Birds," 1913)..

Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books an Manuscripts was established in 1978 on a ping pong table in a basement in Kalamazoo, Michigan. From the beginning, its founder was willing to sell a range of material, but over the years, the business has gravitated toward historical artifacts that are physically attractive in some way--illuminated material, fine bindings, books printed on vellum, fore-edge paintings, beautiful typography and paper, impressive illustration. Today, the company still sells a wide range of things, from (scruffy) ninth century leaves to biblical material from all periods to Wing and STC imprints to modern private press books to artists' bindings. While we are forgiving about condition when something is of considerable rarity, we always try to obtain the most attractive copies possible of whatever we offer for sale.
