This scarce work contains the four Lees Knowles Lectures which the author delivered at Cambridge in 1941, on "The Doctrine of Total War, " "The Mechanized Attack, " "Tactics of Defense, " and "Immutable Realities" (i.e., strategy). The fifth paper in this book is "Notes on Mountain War." While the aim is to throw light on modern land warfare, the role of aircraft in co-operation with ground forces is also discussed, and there is consideration of the influence of sea power on armies in the field.
