First Knobloch edition. Johann Geiler von Kaisersberg (Schaffhausen 1445- Strasbourg 1510), was the most eminent pulpit-orator of his time. He used for this cycle the text of Sebastian Brant's Ship of Fools" (1494) as the basis for his own, developing and ampflifying the satirical verses into a series of sermons which he preached at Strasburg cathedral in 1501-02. They are translated into Latin by his pupil Jakob Otter (c. 1485-1547), who later became a devoted follower of Luther. On leaf Z2r is a note on America, and at the end is a life of Geiler by Beatus Rhenanus. - Contemp. ms. owner's signature covered with a piece of paper, light spotting to title and text, some quires slightly browned, on the whole a good copy. - VD 16 G 779; Proctor 10080; Adams G-317; STC, (German), 335; Muther 938 and 988; Muller p. 126 no. 118; Alden/Landis, European Americana 513/4; not in Benzing.
