About This Item

Paris: André Sauret, 1951. Limited edition. Softcover. g to vg. 1/300. Quarto (9 x 6 5/8"). 319, [3]pp. Uncut. Original glassine over printed printed dust-jacket and blind wrappers, with red and black lettering to spine and front cover. Laid in, a tissue-guarded second state (on China paper) of the frontispiece, being an original lithographic portrait of the author by French painter and illustrator Edouard Goerg (1893-1969). Book housed in its original printed cardboard slipcase.

Originally published in 1938, "La Nausée" is the very first novel of French author and existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.

Written in the form of a diary, the novel takes place in the fictious town of Bouville, and tells the story of Antoine Roquentin, a depressed historian who becomes convinced that inanimate objects and situations interfere on his ability to define himself as well as on his "intellectual and spiritual freedom," thus provoking in the protagonist a sense of nausea.

One of 300 copies on Grand Vergé d'Arches, with a second-state frontispiece on China paper, of which this is No. CCVII (207).

Moderate shelf wear and sporadic soiling to slipcase. Glassine age-toned and slightly chipped at tail of spine. Spine cocked. Some foxing to paper edges. Text in French. Slipcase and glassine in overall good, dust-jacket and wrappers in good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. Slipcase and book protected in modern mylar.
