About This Item

Paris?: Anthoine Chuppin, 1578. 40 unnumbered leaves Small octavo. ( 18 X 10.8 cm.) Bound in mid 20th century full red morocco. Spine ruled in six compartments. Title in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Vignette illustration on title page. Text block clean and crisp. Various chapter decorations. Wanting the very rare folding plate which seems to be missing in most copies. Sabin 79343 After the 1577 English language version this is the earliest edition of Frobisher's voyage one can own. We have had the 1580 Latin Edition twice but have never handled this earlier version or seen one for sale before. Although missing the small folding plate of natives, it seems many copies do not have it or never had it bound in. This is a translation of the English edition by Nicholas Pithou, sieur de Cham-Gobert of the 1577 English edition. The Narrative consists of 32 leaves. The woodcut illustration was entitled Le Portraict des trois Sauuages admenez en Angleterre, leurs habits, armes. Very rare and important for a Northwest Passage collection. 1578
