About This Item

N.P.: N.p., 1941. Neatly folded; discreet pencil notations, bright and fresh. Mimeograph broadside, printed on one side. Mimeo flyer drawing attention to the use of scrip in the company town of Trona, home of American Potash and Chemical Company, then the world's largest producer of potash and borax and a major international supplier of chemicals. The headlined quotation from the isolationist Senator Gerald Nye notes that the company was "jointly owned by ... a British subsidiary of New Consolidated Goldfields of South Africa, and certain Dutch companies, which have been taken over by the Nazis." The aim of the flyer, however, appears to have been support of the "Ham & Eggs" movement, a ballot initiative dating back to 1938 calling for the issuance of scrip to help elderly citizens make ends meet. The flyer ends by stating "If two nations who are murdering each other's citizens at home can get together on a business deal five thousand miles away within still another nation - right here in the heart of California - then why cannot California issue its own debt-free credit to thee extent that every California citizen can have a job with a good pay-check and a pension.
