About This Item

No place noted: Manuscript, 1920. Boards. Very good. [MANUSCRIPT] [NEEDLEWORK] [HOME ARTS]. Octavo (8vo); 97 leaves; stiff wrapper with handmade dust jacket of green stiff paper, hand-lettered title and author to front; bookseller stamp to front pastedown, partially covered by handmade dust jacket; old cloth tape reinforces front hinge; blue lined paper, marbled edges, hand-ruled red lines; inscriptions in blue, red, green, and black ink; foliated with page numerals written in ink recto upper right corner; most text recto only with illustrations and samples pasted to verso, foliation numerals 1-60, numerals 61-82 blank, numerals 83-97 mostly written verso with notes extending to recto; tipped in 8 stitching and construction samples, 26 fabric identified samples, 3 eyelet and  light soiling boards, a few cloth samples missing, binding cracked but holding tight; very good. A needlework manuscript written and wrought by A. LOCK. We are given no hint to the full identity of the notebook author, nor the purpose for cataloging the sewing techniques and fabric samples, but the last written pages give a clue.  Short essays or advanced class notes titled, "Aims of a Needlework Teacher" and "Making a Syllabus", speak of introducing the child to the needle arts from the age of 4 years. Topics covered include stitches, edgings, seams, darning, sewing machines, mattress and carpet construction, knitting notes, undergarment material and construction, and identification of fabrics. Carefully scribed notes in neat blue ink on lined paper with small detailed drawings to accompany the text.
