About This Item

New York:: Grove Press,, (1969). Hardcover first edition -. Fine in yellow cloth in a very near fine dust jacket (creasing to edge of front flap of dj) . First US printing. From the dustjacket "The book is divided into four main sections, the first dealing with the cultural and historical background, containing accounts of the little-known works of writers of African descent, like Juan Latino who wrote Latin verse in sixteenth-century Spain and the black 'educational guinea-pigs' of the Age of Enlihgtenment. 'The African Scene' has chapters on 'oral literature', Hausa and Swahili writing, and 'protest' and 'apprentice' work in European and African languages throughout the continent; and 'The American Scene' deals comprehensively with verse and prose in Latin America and the West Indies as well as the USA - not omitting the blues and the Calypso." Translated from the German by Oliver Coburn and Ursula Lehrburger. Bibliographies follow each chapter. Includes an appendix on the survey of the material. Index 301 pp.
