1624 NERO Caesar 1ed ROME Monarchy Depraved Charles I England Edmund Bolton

Edmund Bolton was an early 17th-century English writer who works of history and poetry. It was, however, his "Nero Caesar" that proved to be his most important historical account. Also known as "Monarchy Depraved", this work describes the attributes of what define a great monarchy – a monarchy that can withstand rebellion and outside authorities. Bolton also warns against civil wars and internal rebellions – the horrors of uprisings and revolts against the government. Bolton doubles down by saying "no prince (i.e. Caesar) is so bad as not to make monarchy seem the best form of government".

While the book title leads the reader to assume it is about ancient Rome and the reign of the tyrant Nero, and it does certainly offer a thorough history of Nero, the book heavily compares him to the House of Stuart and Charles I of England and his reign. According to Bradford,

"Bolton's often repeated claim to sincerity and truth [showed he] was trying to prove not that history can be distorted to suit one's purposes but rather history does in fact tend to support his theses."

A rare, 19th-century printing of Joseph-François Michaud's "History of the Crusades". Michaud's principal work discusses the beginning of the crusades through the Council of Clermont. It covers the departure of crusaders after the Council of Nicee, the Siege of Antioch, Election of Godefroy, Battle of Ascalon, reign of Baudouin II, conquests of Saladin, and the events designed to protect Jerusalem from a fall.

This very rare 1880 first English printing of Michaud's masterpiece is noticeably more desirable that other editions. Not only does this work feature the artwork of Gustave Doré, it is also an impressive set of two enormous tomes!

George Keate's "Account of the Pelew Islands" is a rare 18th-century description of the Pelew people and Oceania regions of the South Pacific including the Philippines and other Pacific islands. Keate wrote this work was based on the account of Henry Wilson, an English sailor in the East India Company. His ship, the Antelope, was shipwrecked off the Palau islands. Following the premier in 1788, this book became immensely popular to readers in England, a book in which Keate described the local Pelew people as savages and drew in audiences with descriptions of unknown and unfamiliar lands.

Keate's 'Account' gives descriptions of coral Reefs, manners and customs of the natives, details of battles and local wars, weapons and military tactics, canoe making, and more.

This 1789 edition includes a section on the vocabulary of the Pelew language.

Thomas Thornton was an 18th-century English hunter known for his sporting tours and outdoor sports. Shortly after the French Revolution in 1802, Thornton ventured to France in hopes of obtaining a large French estate. And while the purchase failed, he was befriended by Napoleon
and gained significant knowledge on the landscape, tradition, culture, and hunting history of France.
In 1806 he published a book on his discovery entitled 'A Sporting Tour Through Various Parts of France'. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
