About This Item

Rutland, Vermont: Charles. E. Tuttle Company , 1960. Square, tight, unmarked copy. Bookplate. Not a book club edition. Not price clipped ($5.00 in US). No remainder mark. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with 55 photographic plates. Authotritative collector's guide to these miniature sculptures, often in ivory or wood, typically used as "pendants or toggles to support medicine boxes, tobacco pouches, and similar articles suspended by a cord from the obi." Thanks to the distinguished netsuke scholars, M. T. Hindson and Frederick Meinertzhagen, this reprint corrects 16 errors that are found in the scarce 1928 first printing (which is said to have been limited to under 300 copies). The plates picture a total of 214 netsuke, 9 in full-color, ranging from the late 17th to the late 19th centuries. Exhaustive appendix lists the known netsuke carvers, metalworkers, and makers of inro. Original brown, silk-like cloth. Corrected reprint of 1928 original. Hardcover. Very Good condition/Very Good dust jacket. 8vo. 185pp.

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
