About This Item
Strassburg: Bernhart Jobin, 1590. First Edition. Hardcover (Vellum). Very Good Condition. Tobias Stimmer and Christoph Maurer. The first separate German edition (the first was published in 1582 as part of a larger guide to hunting) of Du Fouilloux's classic Renaissance guide to hunting with dogs originally published in 1566 as La Venerie. Later rebinding in an illuminated vellum antiphonal leaf laid into what appears to be the original boards (with some repairs to the corners and with new pastedowns), new endpapers added, blanks not present. Large repair to the title with loss of a bit of text including the date (added in manuscript). A bit of worming in the right margin not touching any text, occasional foxing and a persistent but generally mild dampstain in the gutter of much of the volume. Bound with Clamorgan's popular text on wolf hunting. (6), 92, (2), 20 leaves. 68 in text woodcuts, 52 in the first section signed by Tobias Stimmer and Christoph Maurer.
A hugely important and influential treatise on hunting that was translated into English (pirated twice), German and Italian in addition to the more than 20 French editions that appeared. Graesse (C-F) 621. Adams (for the French Edition), 1066. Size: Quarto (4to). Illustrator: Tobias Stimmer and Christoph Maurer. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Fishing & Hunting; Antiquarian & Rare. Inventory No: 043277.
