London New York : Chatto & Windus ; Duffield & Co 1908. A very good original gilt decorated binding. 8vo. 6.5" x 5.0" x 0.75". pp.xxxv/[1p.]/pp.203/[1p. - Colophon]/[3pp. - Prospectus]. Dark brown/grey papered boards. Front: title lettered in gold in gold arch frame. Gold vignette of a man and three pupils with books within the top compartment of the frame. Spine carefully repaired with gilt titles and blind stamped bands. Uncut side page edges. Engraved armorial bookplate to the verso of the front board: "Edward Jackson Barron" **** Original brown paper covers inserted before endpapers. Half title present. Sepia coloured frontis, facing an illustrated title-page, followed by the printed title (dated 1908). Clean text and illustrations throughout. A very good copy of this scarce publication. ** "The engraved title ... was adapted by Miss Blanche C. Hunter from B.M. Add. ms. 31240, f. 4"-- Page [iv]. *** "Nearly forty years ago, Dr. Furnivall collected for the Early English text society 'divers treatises touching the manners and meals of Englishmen in former days.' Some of these were published in 1868, under the title The babees' book (since listed as Early English meals and manners) and others ... in 1869, under the title Queene Elizabethes achademy." The substance of Dr. Furnivall's collections in antiquated English are now presented in modern form. "About half of the translations have been made by Miss L.J. Naylor."--Introd. (p. xi-xii, xxxv)." **** Edward Jackson Barron, Citizen and Armovrer of London Vigilans;' features a shield divided by a chevron stripe and three garbs and is supported by two beasts.
