New York: D. Appleton & Co.. Fair with no dust jacket. 1843. First Edition. Hardcover. Complete two volume set, in fair condition only. Brown paper boards have beige paper labels with black lettering affixed to spines. Both volumes have significant chipping and shelf wear with boards exposed on edges; cracking along joints; some soiling and staining. Both have the remaining material on spines held on with tape. Volume 2 has a crack in the fore-edge of the front board. Some cracking to page gutters, but both volumes still have tight bindings. Interiors have minor foxing. Faint stamp from previous owner on front free endpaper of both books. The first volume has 300 pages and the second has 316. Volume 2 also has 16 pages of advertisements at the rear. Academic and Christian minister Baynard Rush Hall (1793-1863) authored this title under the pen name Robert Carlton, Esq. The partially fictionalized account describes pioneer life in Bloomington, Indiana, where Hall served as the first faculty member of what became Indiana University.
