The binding is rubbed and a bit bumped about the edges. Endpapers are toned. Front flyleaf has a hand written inscription, "Margaret Strudwick, from Marian von R. Phelpe - Christmas 1913." Text is toned and has heavy foxing. There is a square of toning pon page 3 (first pages of Chapter 1) from where a piece of paper had been laid in loosely. Pages 179-192 have a bump at upper right corner. Pages 93-96 have chips on the fore edges from improper opening (not affecting the text). Illustrated with plates. The plates are mostly black and white, but a few are in color. The focus of the book is on art and theatre art in European countries at the outset of the 20th century.

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period.
