Considered "the earliest manual of household management with any pretensions to completeness, calling forth many imitations." Full period brown calf with gilt-lettered black morocco spine label. Top margin of front cover worn away exposing underlying board, spine creased, front hinge cracking, front free endpaper loose, middle signatures a bit off center, bookplates and old ownership signature to preliminary pages, otherwise very good. With the bookplates of William Edward Oates, and Robert Washington Oates, as well as the early ink ownership signature of an Ann Rayner. The earliest editions of this classic work are quite scarce.
