About This Item

New York, NY: The Century Co.. Very Good. 1913. 1st Edition; 3rd state. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good condition to Near Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping, rubbing and beginning fraying. This book matches the 3rd state listed in Sisson (page 127) with blue grey cloth binding, black totem poles and gilt lettering to the front cover and spine and two blank leaves at the rear of the book. The text pages are clean and bright. The front pastedown page includes a previous owner's book plate (John Milton Stewart) , and there is an ink stamped previous owner's name on the front endpaper. The rear inner hinge of the book has begun to crack. "Early in “the unluckiest year of his life” (1913) , during which his dream home in California’s Sonoma Valley burnt down, Jack London, aged thirty-seven, published the short-story collection The Night-Born (Labor, 329). The ten tales in it range from negligible potboilers to such gems as the evocative sketch of a soldier’s life “War”, and the suspenseful fight story “The Mexican”, set during the Mexican Revolution (c. 1910–1920) and embodying London’s “finest allegory of the revolutionary spirit” (Labor, Leitz, Shepard, xxix)."
