About This Item

London: Burns Oates & Washbourne Ltd, 1922.. The story runs curiously parallel with the Tractarian movement, Oxford having its counterpart in Strasbourg...Ratisbonne had been a priest already three years when Keble preached his Assize Sermon on July 14, 1833; and the Institute of Notre Dame de Sion received Episcopal sanction in Newman's critical year of 1845. But curiously, in the year 1847, the Constitutions of the Institute were approved by Mgr. Affre and Newman's Oratory began." Pp.xxii/336, black & white portrait frontispiece + 2 further black & white plates, gift message to front free endpaper, number notation to inside front board. Blue cloth, gilt title to front and spine, spine faded with rubbed patch to centre. Good. ** "Marie-Thodor Ratisbonne, N.D.S., (December 28, 1802 - January 10, 1884) was a noted Jewish convert to the Catholic Church, who became a priest and missionary and who later founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion. He was the brother of Maria Alphonse Ratisbonne, who joined him in this effort."(wiki).
