About This Item
New York, NY G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1961. Hardcover First Ed, but unstated. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY WILLIAM READ WOODFIELD. First Ed, unstated. Very good/Very good. Book shows light wear at edges; lightly yellowed. Dustwrapper shows light chipping at spine; light wear at extemeties; mylar protected. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 321pp. Hardback with DJ. Chessman's story isn't as "famous" as the Hauptman case, but it continues to amaze me that anyone, as recently as 1960, could actually be executed for "perverted sex crimes" where a conviction was based on severely questionable testimony, a judge's obvious bias, and a police department's determination to "get" their man. Nonetheless, I would recommend Ninth Life to staunch death penalty supporters who insist that the system "works", whatever THAT means, and to anyone who needs to wake up to the travesties of justice that take place in our modern-day society. A good read and even more, an excellent topic for intelligent discussion and debate. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR.
