About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1940. First edition. Covers showing a bit of a stain; one corner bent; general light soil. 12mo, 32pp pamphlet in wrappers, stapled. Published as the third in the publisher's series of Macmillan War Pamphlets. This copy has been inscribed by Forster on the inside front wrapper: "C.H.C.B. from E.M.F. 6-12-40". The recipient was Forster's friend Collins Baker (Charles Henry Collins Baker), art historian and Blake specialist whom Forster came to know while both worked at the National Gallery. Forster would publish an obituary tribute to his friend upon Collins's death in 1959. A delicate pamphlet that, while by no means rare, is seldom encountered with a Forster inscription.
