About This Item

New Glasgow, Nova Scotia: H.H. Henderson & Co., Booksellers and Stationers., No Date (circa 1890).. Canadian Edition, rare variant imprint. . Octavo, original brown cloth titled and decorated in black and colours, gilt titles on spine, yellow coated endpapers. Engraved frontispiece and pictorial title page, the printed title leaf with the Henderson imprint is a cancel (tipped in on a stub). The spine panel bears the imprint of A.G. Watson. 406 pp + 8 pp publisher's catalogue of "Works by R,M, Ballantyne" at rear. Four additional inserted engraved plates. Gift (prize) inscription on a preliminary leaf which states: "St. John's Church Band of Hope 2nd Prize Awarded to George W. Sutherland, Stellarton, May 1st, 1891". To confuse matters further, the sheets are the UK sheets, Printed in Edinburgh by T. and A. Constable; & the catalogue bound in at the rear is for British books listed at British prices. The most recent Ballantyne title in the catalogue appears to be "Blue Lights", first published in 1888. Corners a touch soft, a very good, bright copy.

¶ A very uncommon Canadian imprint. Watson was the regular Canadian publisher, and this edition bears his imprint at the base of the spine; we can find no trace in library holdings of another copy of this New Glasgow imprint. Stellarton is a small town adjacent to New Glasgow, hence the inscription.
