About This Item
Camden, ME Down East Books, 1989. Hardcover First Ed; First Printing indicated. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR. First Ed; First Printing indicated. Very Good in Very Good DJ: Both book and DJ show indications of moderate use: Book shows light wear to extremities; slight spine lean; faint indications of exposure to moisture have crinkled the last five pages a bit, while the cover appears unaffected; there is a small, ver faint coffee stain at the bottom of the fore-edge; binding secure; text clean. DJ shows a very faint damp stain at the bottom edge of the rear panel; else mild rubbing; light wear to extremities; price sticker at inside front flap; mylar-protected. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 4to. 248pp. Hardback with DJ. The author and his friends took an extended canoe trip over 2 summers in the Norther Barrenlands of Canada (mostly on the Thelon River), and overwintered in an extremely remote area in a small cabin. Their sojourn there was interrupted by the crash of a Russian satellite nearby. The author writes well of the physical and emotional hurdles involved in such an experience, and describes brilliantly the contrasts between life in the bush, and the intrusive aspects of modern civilization as represented by the satellite and the search for it. I have read dozens of books of this nature, and this stays in my mind as one of the best. While Christopher's book titled "Return to Warden's Grove" is clearly a good read it takes on greater significance if you first read "In the North of Our Lives". You really can not put "Return" into proper context until you read "North of our Lives". For anyone who has interest in the north woods, Canada, or the challenges of mounting an expedition of this magnitude this book is priceless. This will be a book you will re-read several times. Its that good. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR.
