The existence in northwestern North America of a cluster of societies possessing matrilineal institutions has long been a puzzle to anthropologists. It has been suggested that these social; structures originated on the coast and diffused inland; that they are historically related "through many intermediate stages" to the matrilineal systems of the Eastern Woodlands; and that they were carried to North America by the ancestors of the Na-Dene peoples, retained in the Athabaskans to the east attaches importance to similarities between northwest American and Melanesian social structures, although he stops short of suggesting actual historical links. Condition: Institutional stamp on front wrappers, edge wear, corners bumped else very good.
