About This Item
New Haven, CT: Manuscript Notes, 1828. Series of handwritten notes by an unknown student of a Materia Medica course taught at Yale University by Professor Eli Ives (1779-1861). Ives was one of the originators of the Yale School of Medicine, one of the first five professors, and chaired the Materia and Medica and Botany until 1829. The notes consist of about 400 pages (about 200 written on both sides) on six long thin stitched pads about 8 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide, mostly from 1828-29 but one part dated 1824. Generally good condition with just a few partial leaves either separated from or at the top of the pads. The notes describe properties and uses of mainly botanicals and some other substances (ether, cobwebs, skunk oil, petroleum etc.), and the first section alone includes notes on more than forty medicines. We purchased it with a piece of white fabric tape around the grouping, fastened with a straight pin as pictured.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
