Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1862. First American Edition . Hardcover. Good. xii, 403 pp. Original pebbled green cloth, blind-stamped, spine title gilt. Macleod was a surgeon stationed in Smyrna and Sebastopol during the Crimean war; the first war to use rifled and breech-loading cannons, which had longer ranges and greater accuracy, penetrating power, and rate of fire than the old smoothbore cannons. Macleod writes of the war "it has shown us wounds of a severity, perhaps never before equaled; it has enabled us to observe the effects of missiles introduced for the first time into warface." Macleod discusses the geography and climatology of the Crimea, military hygiene in the field, the use of chloroform as an anesthetic, and the various wounds and injuries common on the battlefield, especially gunshot wounds." Heirs of Hippocrates 1933. From the library of A.C. Hamlin, author of The Battle of Chancellorsville, with his signature in pencil on the ffep: "A.C. Hamlin, 2nd Maine Regt." Hamlin, a nephew of Lincoln's first Vice-President, was Assistant Surgeon in the 2nd Maine Infantry during the first Bull Run campaign and advanced to Medical Inspector of the Regular Army during the Civil War. He later became Surgeon-General of the State of Maine. This book would have been helpful to consult when treating the victims of the modern weapons of the American Civil War. Wear at head and tail of spine, corners bumped, some staining to cloth boards. A good, tight copy.
