About This Item

Paris: Garnier Freres, Libraires-Editeurs, Rue des Saint-Peres, 6, Palais Royal, 215. Printed by Ad Mame et Cie in Tours, 1858. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. TOPFFER, Rodolphe (1799-1846), SAINTE-BEUVE, Charles Augustin (1804-1869), CALAME, Alexandre (1810-1864). "Nouveaux Voyages en Zigzag." Paris: Garnier Freres, Libraires-Editeurs, Rue des Saint-Peres, 6, Palais Royal, 215. Printed by Ad Mame et Cie in Tours, 1858. Second edition. Complete. French language. Quarto. [6] [I]-XVII [1] 1-454. 478 pp. 10 1/2 x 6 1/3 inches. Contemporary red pebble-grained cloth, richly gilt, with four raised bands forming five compartments on spine, gilt-lettered in second with gilt center-tool in rest, gilt dentelles, white moire-pattern endpapers, all edges gilt. 48 engraved plates after Topffer and Calame engraved by Karl Girardet, Français d'Aubigny, de Bar, Gagnet, Forrest, et al. With hundreds of in-text woodcut vignettes after Topffer. Topffer's charming travelogues through the Alps in which he guides caravans of his boarding-school students on foot thrum with illustrations of both Topffer's humorous caricatures and Calame's sublime mountainscapes. Here we have views of mountains, glaciers, valleys, cities, towns, and scenes of European life, all in a bucolic nineteenth-century mode that seems impossibly idyllic to the contemporary reader. This volume collects the following excursions: Voyage a la Grand Chartreuse (1833); Voyage autour du Mont Blanc (1842); and Voyages a Genes (1834); which go through: Seyssel, Hautecombe, Chambery, Grenoble, Martigny, Col de Balme, Col Ferret, Sion, Stalden, Zermatt, Matterhorn, Interlaken, Thun, Bern, Lausanne, Annecy, Lanslebourg, Susa, Rivoli, Turin, Asti, Alessandria, Genoa, Oneglia, Monaco, Nice, Gap, and back to Grenoble. Second edition of this great classic of mountain literature and the Ideal sequel to 1844's "Voyages en Zigzag." References: ACL 314. Aliprandi, "Il Cervino," 27-30. Angelini 2335.
