The small paper illustrated edition of J J Rousseau's epistolary novel in six bright and uniform volumes. Complete in six volumes. With half titles. Small paper edition. Large paper editions were issued in limited numbers.Epistolary novel b Jean-Jacques Rousseau, originally published in 1761. Inspired by the history of Heoise d'Argenteuil and Peter Abelard, a medieval tale of passion and Christian renunciation. This title featured in the 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' among other works deemed heretical or contrary to morality by the Sacred Congregation of the Index. Catholics were forbidden from reading them. Exploring autonomy and authenticity as moral values. With a preface by J Grand-Carteret. With illustrations by Edmond Hedouin engraved by himself and Toussaint and etchings of Lalauze throughout the text. Frontispiece to vol. I. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was an influential philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment in Europe and the French Revolution. He played a key role in the development of modern political, economic, and educational thought. In uniform quarter morocco bindings over marbled boards, marbled endpapers. With gilt tooling to spine. Externally very smart with only light rubbing to boards. Previous owner's ink inscription to recto front blank leaf. Internally, firmly bound. Odd light minor spotting to odd leaf only, pages otherwise generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
