About This Item

Amsterdam : Paul Marret, 1694-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 volume set. 12mo. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked with original spine laid on. Generally sound internally; with clean, white, unmarked pages. Collated. 4 fold out maps + 12 folding plates of Latin American cities or provinces, and 2 frontispieces. 18 plates total. <br> An important and influential book on early European travel and settlement of Spanish America. Gage was an English traveler, missionary, and member of the Dominican order. He traveled throughout the Spanish New World and lived in Guatemala. After suffering a crisis of faith, he renounced his Catholic religion and returned to Cromwellian England. He published his English-American; or New Survey of the West India's in 1648. His account of the richness and weakness of the Spanish possessions helped inspire the English conquest of Jamaica and attempted conquest of Hispaniola under General Robert Venable and Sir William Penn's expedition. Gage was Venable's chaplain on the expedition and died in the State's service in Jamaica, 1656. Ref: DNB00. The translator is said to have been Adrien Baillet.--Sabin 26303.
