About This Item

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons [no date], new edition. (hardcover) vi, [2], 466pp; v, [5], 486pp, [2]; [4], 158pp, [8], 330pp, [2]; [4], 430pp, [2]; v, [3], 504pp, [2]; viii, 621pp, [3]; [2], 612pp. Very good. All volumes not dated (set presumed 1883). Eight (8) volumes, bound in seven (7). 12mo. Bound in brown, polished half-leather over blue and gold marbled boards; spines in six compartments; compartments, tooled in gilt; set compartment in red leather, lettered in gilt; volume compartment in olive-green leather, lettered in gilt. All edges marbled. Marbled EPs. Leather rubbed, most notably at extremities. Spines lightly faded. Foxing to marbled edges. Textblocks with some foxing, largely early and late, occasionally at the margins. Beautiful sketch of a woman's face on the verso of the rear-blanco in vol.V (Although it does not appear to be in ink, we have opted not to erase it. It is striking!) Each volume illustrated with engraved plates: vol.I with seven illustrations; vol.II with seven illustrations; vol.III with six illustrations; vol.IV with three illustrations; vol.V with seven illustrations; vol.VI with frontispiece; vol.VII with vignette title; vol.VIII with vignette title. Set includes: vol.I - Adam Bede; vol.II - Mill on the Floss; vol.III (constitutes volumes III and IV bound together) - Silas Marner [and] Clerical Life; vol.V - Felix Holt; vol.VI - Romola; vol.VII - Middlemarch; vol.VIII Daniel Deronda. From the library of Dominick S. Gregg, with his bookplate to the front-pastedown of each volume. After Gregg's library, this set became part of the library of renowned English-Canadian physician Ian McWhinney - the "Founding Father of Family Medicine" - with his bookplate opposite on the ffep of each volume. A striking set with an intriguing provenance..
