This set includes: Volume I: Adam Bede, originally published 1859. Eliot's first novel which has remained in print ever since. A country story recognised as a significant literary work. Illustrated with seven plates, collated complete. Volume III: Silas Marner, originally published 1861. An outwardly simple tale of a linen weaver, noted for its strong realism and treatment of issues ranging from religion to industrialisation. Illustrated with three plates, collated complete. Volume IV: Scenes of Clerical Life, originally published 1857. Eliot's first published work of fiction, a collection of three short stories. Illustrated with six plates, collated complete. Volume V: Felix Holt, original published 1866. A social novel following the political disputes of a small English town at the time of the First Reform Act of 1832. Illustrated with seven plates, collated complete. Volume VI: Romola, originally published 1863. A historical novel set in the fifteenth century seen as a study of life in the city of Florence during the Italian Renaissance. With illustrated title page, collated complete. Previously held in the library of William Hesketh Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme, an English industrialist, philanthropist, and politician. Bound in half red calf with patterned boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Minor loss to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Previous owner's bookplates to the front pastedown and endpapers. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
