About This Item
Oxford: The Daniel Press, 1903. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Oxford, The Daniel Press, 1903. Quarto, [vi] (including blanks), 24 pages plus a folding facsimile manuscript (collotype on transparent paper). Original overlapping grey-blue printed wrappers; both bottom edges and the leading edge of the rear wrapper are trimmed a little (presumably to tidy them up); leading and bottom edges uncut; endpapers and a few edges a little discoloured from contact with the wrappers; minimal signs of age and use; an excellent copy. 'A noteworthy experiment in versification by Robert Bridges [later poet laureate] in the form of an Epistle to L.M.... It will be seen that the poem is in (438) quantitative hexameters, modified in accordance with Stone's phonetic system, in which all syllables in English are definitely either long or short, and the verse is for the ear, not for the eye. The poem is an experiment in obedience to a consistently thought-out body of definite phonetic rules, and its principles are explained in the "Note" on pp. 19-24. Mr. Bridges wrote out the whole poem in manuscript in his own new phonetic script, and one large quarto page is given in facsimile in the present volume ... Issued on March 5, 1903. The prospectus (no. 200) gives the price as 10s. each (300 copies were printed)' ('The Daniel Press. Memorials of C.H.O. Daniel with a Bibliography of the Press,' #54).
