New York: Crown Publishers, Inc.,, 1984. Inscribed by the artist First edition, first printing, inscribed by the artist "to Dana, Maurice Sendak, Christmas '84" on the half-title. Pacific Northwest Ballet's production of The Nutcracker was premiered in Seattle, Washington, during the Christmas 1983 season. In working on the project, Sendak returned to E. T. A. Hoffmann's original source material and, as he noted in his introduction, "Fidelity to Hoffmann's spirit has also been my guide in this illustrated version of Nutcracker". The book, with a new translation by Ralph Manheim, was published in 1984 in both signed limited and trade editions. Quarto. Original greyish blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in silver, front cover with panel design in blind, illustrated endpapers. With dust jacket. Illustrations throughout by Sendak. Some slight fading to binding, some occasional foxing; extremities of jacket worn, unclipped, some toning; a near-fine copy in a very good jacket.
