Obelisk #1

by Kaye, Lenny

  • Used
Brunswick: Lenny Kaye, 1961. 30pp each, side stapled. First issue of the first sci-fi fanzine produced by a 15 year old Lenny Kaye from his home in Brunswick, New Jersey. Paper tanned lacking the bottom staple, else a very good example. Long before he was known as the guitarist for the Patti Smith Group, Kaye was one of thousands of science fiction fans who took to publishing their own fanzines that were traded through the mail with other like minded fans. Obelisk contains the usual mix of con reports, letters to the editor, some poetry and criticism. After Obelisk, Kaye went on to produce Sadistic Sphinx, Hieroglyph, and Pharaoh. an early glimpse into fandom that would eventually express itself in a legendary curatorial capacity when Kaye later compiled the legendary garage rock compilation 'Nuggets'.
