About This Item

New York: Charles de Behr, 1832. First edition. Muslin backed paper-covered boards, edges untrimmed. 8vo; 237 p + 1 leaf ads. Good. Covers faintly dampstained, minor chipping to paper-covered boards, small dampstain in the gutter of the first 6 leaves and in the margin of the last dozen leaves. Mildly foxed. Lacks paper spine-label. Ownership inscription of "Cary C: Cocke / Bremo" on front pastedown; also signed on the title-page. Dr. Cary Charles Cocke, a physician, was the son of John Hartwell Cocke, one of Jefferson's best friends who helped him found the University of Virginia. Jefferson sent his master builder John Neilson to help John Cocke design and build Bremo Bluff on the James. General Light-horse Harry Lee and Jefferson were not friends, to say the least, as the letters in the book abundantly attest. To find this book with such a provenance is highly unusual. Howes L201; Sabin 39751 ("The first edition has been rare, mainly on account of its having been rigidly suppressed, and as far as possible destroyed").
