Scarce original edition of this book on the history of navigation and the British Law of the Sea; including salvage, slave trade, smuggling, laws of war, prizes. Published during the American Civil War and no doubt of interest to British mariners involved with Rebel blockade runners. All that wasa published of a larger planned set. Hardcover, full green cloth with gilt lettering and blind-stamped decoration. General wear, some loss to spine ends, stains from old tape, hinges tender with splits, pencil name & date on free endsheet, some foxing; some sections unopened. Text clean; xii, 471 pages; index.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket. Octavo.
