About This Item

J Carpenter. Fair. 1806. First Edition. Hardcover. Pair of small format hardbacks bound in half leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. Paste-downs and end papers marbled. Both volumes rubbed and edges worn. Leather spine on Vol 2 is missing. Some foxing and pages age toned. Book plate on both front paste-downs. Vol 1 192 pages and Vol 2 240 pages. The volumes contain a series of letters written while walking through France just after the Revolution. The author was not impressed by Paris 'her long streets are in general narrow and nasty' but liked Avignon 'this venerable old town' .
