Fine delicate engravings by Chretien de Mechel or Christian von Mechel (and Bartholomaus Hubner) after works by the Renaissance master Hans Holbein.

Incomplete copy of the first edition of these suites of engravings and sepia aquatints.

Three complete suites (Dance of Death*, the Passion of Christ and Portraits), plus several additional plates, altogether 40 engraved plates and two engraved vignettes.

Title page, 14 pages of descriptive text to the Triumph of Death with two engraved vignettes, 47 engravings on 12 plates of the Triumph of Death (Le Triomphe de la Mort) and two plates entitled Triumph of Wealth (Triumphus Divitiarum) and Triumph of Poverty (Triumphus Paupertatus); frontispiece and 12 plates to The Passion of Our Lord (La Passion de Notre Seigneur); 2 double-page fold-out engravings A Scene of the Insurrection of the Peasants and The Prophet Samuel Declared to Saul; 1 plate of the costume of a young woman of Basel from Costumes d'hommes et de femmes du seizième siècle; and 10 plates of Portraits.

*According to the exhaustive Dance of Death website dodedans.com, Mechel copied drawings made by the very young Peter Paul Rubens rather than the original Holbein woodcuts.

Portraits engraved by Bartholomaus Hubner include a self-portrait of the artist Hans Holbein, Holbein's wife Elsbeth with their children Philipp and Katharina, burgermeister of Basel Jakob Meyer, Meyer's second wife Dorothea (mistakenly titled with name of first wife Anna Scheckenpurlin), Magdalena Offenburg as Greek courtesan Lais of Corinth and Roman classical goddess Venus, humanist philosopher Erasmus, scholar Bonifacius Amerbach, publisher Johann Froben and chancellor of England, Sir Thomas More (lacking the two plates of More's family as usual).

Leather spine scuffed, gilt title bright, marble boards scratched and torn with loss of paper to front corners, book block splitting with some signatures proud, but good impressions of all plates, with scattered peripheral foxing, toning and finger smudges.

1925. An overflowing scrap book of cherished ephemera belonging to Ruth Irene Cox, documenting the "author's" high school years. Cox was clearly active in her high school years, as well as a dedicated archiver. From Football scorecards to newspaper reviews of Orchestras, the album contains three years of high school ephemera carefully preserved and annotated. Her membership in the Young Women's Christian Association, The Glee Club, and The Girl Reserves among many other clubs are all detailed. A musicophile, Cox enthusiastically attended (and collected at) state-wide concerts, from high schools and universities to the Kansas Symphony Orchestra, Mirza Theatre and more.Ephemera includes holiday celebration notes, special edition Christmas stamps, Epworth League ephemera, as well as Valentine's Day cards and cut-outs gifted to our heroine, comedy letters from "The Goblina", and a pink token from Health Week, March 1926 "I wear Hygienic Shoes".Throughout the collection, Cox acquires a car, and begins… Read More

12 mo. (7 x 4 1/2 inches) Glasgow, 1700. First Edition. (viii) 112 pages. Good condition: early nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, considerable wear to hinges (front hinge split, but holding), title in gilt on spine.

Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.

Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period.
