"The Italian poet Dante, who appreciated Statius' sensitivity to human suffering, classed him as a Christian and ranked him, as a poet, with Ovid, Virgil, and Lucan, assigning him a prominent role in the Purgatorio. In England, Chaucer and Lydgate, his disciple, were influenced by the story of the Thebaid, and expressed their admiration for its rendering by Statius. (Grant. Greek and Latin Authors 800 B.C. - A. D. 1000, p. 406).
