About This Item

Buffalo, NY: Charles Ahrhart, Gies & Co., Printers & Engravers, 1901. 12mo. 5 x 7 in. 176 pp. 1 large folding colour map frontisp. Plan of the Pan-American Exposition, drawn by C.E. Pelz, numerous photo illustrations and plates, 1 large folding map “New Map of the City of Buffalo.” Embossed forest-green softcovers, raised & embossed gilt lettering & globe medal on front cover, embossed fir & palm trees (old tape repairs to closed tears at fold creases on frontisp. map, some dustsoiling, edgewear), still VG- copy, from the library of Prof. Marvin Nathan. First edition of this fairly uncommon travel guide book to the Pan-American Exposition, featuring both the large folding maps. Included are descriptions of the range of acts and attractions featured at the Exposition, which included Bostock’s Trained Wild Animals, Akoun’s Beautiful Orient, Venice in America with Italian Gondoliers, Roltair’s House Upside Down, or “Palace of Illusions,” the “War Dance of Cape Lopez Blacks,” the Philippine Village, the Hawaiian Village which featured a representation of the Kilauea Volcano ever erupting, and the Battle of Missionary Ridge Cyclorama. Augmenting the City of Buffalo map is a directory to all of the streets and cross streets, and hotels, restaurants, and other services also receive mention. Sadly, the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York is best remembered today as the site of President McKinley’s assassination Sept. 6, 1901. This guide book was released with issues containing just one plan to the exposition, as well as this version which featured the City of Buffalo map as well.
