About This Item

Seven issues of The Crisis magazine, the official organ of the NAACP, 1960-1964. The Crisis was founded in 1910 by W. E. B. Du Bois, who edited the early volumes. It was originally subtitled "A Record of the Darker Races". Measuring 5.25" x 7.75". Issues included: December, 1960 (Vol. 67, No. 10), September 1961 (Vol 68, No. 7), October 1961 (Vol 68, No. 8), November 1961 (Vol 68, No. 9), February 1962 (Vol. 69, No. 2), February 1963 (Vol. 70, No. 2).The Crisis is the official magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It was founded by W. E. B. Du Bois (editor), the magazine set itself up as arguably the most widely read and influential periodical about race and social injustice in U.S. history. As a platform for the NAACP's views, the magazine acted as a corrective force in the publishing field when it came to African American representation in the media. Therefore, much of the published content depicts both uplifting accounts of achievements by African Americans and uncensored reports of racial discrimination and violence. One article from February 1963 titled "Public School Desegregation - North and West" highlights the statistics as to why segregation is harmful to both Black and white children. One article showcases the issues on discrimination for Black housing in New Jersey 1963. This act created a peaceful picket line outside of the apartment complex in which an African American man was denied application. Two black and white photographs are shown of Black men, women, and children of all ages march with the organizational help of the NAACP. In the April 1964 issue, a section in yellow papers titled "Freedom News" highlights positive reports regarding the fight for racial equity. Such news includes the Norfolk branch welcoming of 10,000 new members, the Honolulu branch eager to learn about the oldest civil rights organization by ordering 200 copies of Langston Hughes' Fight for Freedom, and a successful parade led by 75 NAACP youth members in Connecticut. This archive features articles on developments in civil rights legislation, desegregation of schools, cross-racial coalitions forming against bigotry, police brutality, Black employment, college news, Black authors, poetry, art, and updates on the actions undertaken by NAACP president Roy Wilkins as well as those of individual branches across the country. Two early covers have tears and wear. Overall very good condition.
