The battle for Okinawa was a long, drawn-out affair that resulted in a tremendous loss of life, ships and aircraft. The Japanese had introduced kamikaze attacks earlier but they reached a new level at Okinawa. Twenty two ships were sunk and 250 damaged, some so badly that they were out of the war.
