Corners of some pages bumped or somewhat creased.. 301 p. 20 cm. Translation of Le père Goriot. Balzac gave up the study of law for literature. This work was written in 1834, when the author was 35 and at the height of his powers. It first appeared as a serial in the Revue de Paris, and was published in book form in 1835. This belongs in that grand series of works by this author known as the human comedy. The translation is basedon that made by Ellen Marriage for the complete edition of Balzac's work edited by Professor George Saintsbury. It has been considerably revised and modernized.
