Blue cloth covers with gilt titling to spine in photocopy dust jacket. Shelfware, bumped, some fading, staining to covers, pages age toned, contents clean.Describes the Canadian mariner and his life of fishing and seal culling in Newfoundland. The seal trade is controversial and abhorrent to most people today, but then such scruples barely existed.Captain Abram Kean, born in 1855, a man with great seamanship abilities and unquestionable courage. In this autobiography Captain Kean describes his early days and introduction to the seal fishery, sailing under auxiliary sail, a winter aboard the WOLF and her loss in 1896, his domestic woes, Bowring Brothers, Sir Wilfred Grenfell, cod fishery, the laws of herring fishery, sailing vessels employed in frozen waters, Newfoundland fishery, the dangers of sealing, S/S NASCOPIE, TERRA-NOVA, AURORA etc. By 1934 Captain Kean was being congratulated for bringing home a total of one million seals during his long career since being made master.
