Limited to 1,447 copies of which this is number 1,380. Illustrated with colour frontispiece, thirty-one plates and many in-text illustrations with tissue guards. Engraved by Jean Boussod, Manzi, Joyant & Co. near Pairs. Collated complete. An important and comprehensive biography of Oliver Cromwell, a British a politician and soldier, widely regarded as one of the most important statesmen in English history. Cromwell is a controversial figure in Britain and Ireland, due to his use of military force to acquire, then retain political power, and the brutality of his Irish campaign (1649). Written by Samuel Rawson Gardiner, an English historian, who specialized in 17th-century English history as a prominent foundational historian of the Puritan revolution and the English Civil War. In the original brown cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light scattered spotting.
