About This Item

New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers,, 2000. First edition, first printing, of the first book in the Olivia series, signed and dated by the author on the title page, "Ian Falconer, NYC, 5. 25. 01". Awarded a Caldecott Medal Honor in 2001, Falconer's series of picture books would run to eleven titles and was adapted for a Nickelodeon television show in 2008. Signed copies of the first edition are rare. An early review of the title in the Los Angeles Times hailed an "extraordinary debut for both Ian Falconer and his unforgettable porcine heroine". A review of a later title in the New York Times described the main character as "the irrepressible Olivia - part Babe, part Liza Minnelli". Ian Falconer (1959-2023), originally known as a theatre set and costume designer, also created cover art for The New Yorker. There would be eleven titles in the Olivia series, first published between 2000 and 2017. An additional series, not written by Falconer, was published to accompany the television series. Quarto. Original pictorial laminated boards, spine lettered in white, illustrated endpapers. With dust jacket. Fine condition. Los Angeles Times, 22 October 2000, p. F6; New York Times, 16 November 2003, p. B45.

Synopsis

Published in 2000 by Atheneum, New York,  Olivia  was written and illustrated by Ian Falconer. Along with being an author and illustrator, Falconer is also a costume and set designer for theatre, and he has created over 30 covers for The New Yorker magazine. In the Olivia series, which to-date includes twelve books, Falconer uses a limited color palette of black and white, with occasional splashes of red. His otherwise simple renderings sometimes include the work of famous artists like Degas and Pollock within the story. This minimalist style is reflected in the original  Olivia  cover, which depicts only the title and main character, not even including the author’s name.
